Gear, glorious gear
In case anyone’s interested, I am quite specific about the gear that I use while adventureing. Yes, I just said adventureing. It’s a word.
Anyway.
Tent: REI Halfdome 2 HC. This tent has, beyond the shadow of a doubt, been the most reliable and hassle-free tent that I have ever used. I highly recommend it to anybody looking for a quality, affordable, lightweight 2-person tent with a footprint/fly option.
Sleeping bag: REI Polar Pod (20 degree). Great bag, low price. A little warm for Australian weather, but gets the job done.
Boots: Vasque Wasatch GTX for the heavy stuff and Montrail Kalaharis for everyday stuff. Vasques are amazing. They’re rigid enough to use snowshoes and crampons with, but still quite lightweight. Montrail, which is now owned by Columbia, puts out great shoes that are renowned for fitting a wide variety of feet. I have to wear Superfeet insoles with mine.
Shell: REI Taku Jacket. Award-winning and undoubtedly the best coat I’ve every owned.
Layers: Assorted The North Face and REI.
Shirt: Columbia Omni Dry (with “O’Reilly’s” embroidered on the pocket!)
Bottom Half: Columbia Omni Dry zip-offs
Stove: Primus Multi-Fuel System. Brilliant stove that runs off of virtually any liquid or gaseous combustible liquid. I’ve used diesel, white gas, kerosene, unleaded fuel, and methylated spirits to run this baby and the longest that it’s ever taken to boil a litre of water has been about 4 minutes.
Harness: Black Diamond Chaos (for abseiling, flying fox, etc.) VERY comfortable harness that, um, allows for “freedom of movement,” so to speak. I also appreciate the burly rear haul loop for hooking up tuglines and carrying extra gear that can’t be hung from a zero Kn loop.
More to come…
